Maker's Spotlight: Om Maker
I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I often say, if it weren’t for my business and it’s dependence on Instagram and Facebook, I would probably delete all of my accounts. But, then I stumble upon some truly beautiful people, who create truly beautiful things, and my faith in the world is restored. Those are the moments I am so grateful to be alive in the day and age of social media, and everything it has to offer. One of those people being Janina Church, metalsmith artist and owner of Om Maker.
What inspired you to start your own business?
After having my first child, going back to regular work just wasn’t and option. Spending time with her was just too precious. I am also an independent spirit and have always enjoyed being my own boss. I’ve been a small business owner in one way or another for about 17 years now.
What sets you apart from everyone else?
Well, in comparison to most metalsmith artists, there aren’t that many electro formers out there. I think I am one in less than a handful of electroform artists here in town. Though I think what sets me apart from other electro form artists in general is the delicate nature of design in my pieces. Which makes for an interesting contrast with the rugged textured organic way the copper forms on each piece.
Where do you gain inspiration from?
Honestly, I have to say I gain the most inspiration from the textures of our human experience. All of my work has some deeper meaning or some expression of life’s journey. I am a yoga teacher, so my spiritual practice is a huge part of my inspiration too. I know that sounds really woo woo, but it’s the truth! Being in a meditative state allows my thoughts and feelings to flow as I process. When this happens, my imagination is let loose and creativity takes over.
What's your favorite part of the creative process?
What I talked about earlier. Being in that space of pure conscious creativity. I love stepping up to my bench and just allowing my hands to dance across materials and tools. Channeling feelings into form.
What are you most excited for with your business right now?
I am most excited to see how it evolves. We can plan all we want, have projections and such, but if last year taught me anything, it’s to learn to navigate while at the same time staying open unexpected change.
Who are your 3 favorite small businesses?
Oh boy, that’s hard. I have so many! The first that comes to mind is Akasha Apothecary. Alissa is an amazing herbalist, conscious entrepreneur and dedicated philanthropist. Next would be Everything and Nothing, another environmentally conscious entrepreneur. Amanda’s jewelry designs and art are brilliantly unique. She also uses organic or up cycled materials for her clothing line. Finally, Santa Cruz Mountains Makers’ Markets. Bree does an incredible job creating events for local artisans. I am inspired by her drive. Organizing markets, while juggling a family and her own art business. Her events were/are a huge part of my businesses success.
What's your favorite form of self-care?
My daily sunrise beach run is the most blissful part of my day. Also snuggling up with my family and cats and watching a movie.
